In 2019, we were approached by internationally acclaimed podcast producers, Casefile Presents. The partnership presented the perfect opportunity to highlight what’s missing from the public narrative of missing persons; the experiences of those left behind.
Based on our book, Too Short Stories, humanising long-term missing Australians by going beyond the details in a poster, What’s Missing was recorded in March 2020. Coming full-circle, the podcast’s beautiful theme song is Wildflowers by Jess Ribero; a song she wrote and performed for The Unmissables ABC docuseries.
Through candid interviews with eight families, we explored what it’s actually like when someone disappears; from the police, media, psychics and hoaxes to the financial toll, the administrative nightmares and the psychological torment.
Endorsed by Emeritus Professor Dr Pauline Boss, principal theorist and author of ambiguous loss (USA), as well as the CEO of Missing People (UK), Jo Youle, and Director for the Centre of Missing Persons (UK), Karen Shalev, we released the 10-part series for National Missing Persons Week 2020.
With over 800,000 downloads, and overwhelmingly positive reviews, our relationship with Casefile has since led to the creation of Matty and Missing Niamh.
We spoke to the families of Nicola Sallese, Bung Siriboon, Warren Meyer, Paul Rushworth, Sevak Simonian, David and Andrew Graham, Paul Wright and Owen Redman. We asked the type of questions friends don’t feel comfortable to, journalists aren’t considerate of as well as those well outside the remit of police.
Two bonus episodes feature conversations with internationally renowned missing persons expert Assoc. Prof. Sarah Wayland and forensic scientist Assoc. Prof. Jodie Ward.
