Loren spoke to Women’s Agenda about Julie Ann Garciacelay’s case, describing it as one of the earliest examples of what we now understand as ambiguous loss. “Julie disappeared decades before we had the language, structures, or even a designated police unit to respond to these cases,” she said. “It’s a stark reminder that the trauma of unresolved loss doesn’t fade with time. It compounds.” She emphasised that National Missing Persons Week offers an opportunity not only to raise awareness but to push for justice in long-neglected cases like Julie’s. “We need to recognise the psychological toll that decades of silence and institutional inaction have on families – especially when a young woman vanishes under suspicious circumstances, and no one is held to account.
