Herald Sun, 17 October 2024
This week, we honour the memory of Julie Garciacelay, a young Californian who was tragically abducted and murdered in Melbourne in 1975. Julie disappeared from her sister’s North Melbourne flat just 18 months before the infamous Easey Street murders, yet her case remains unresolved.
A memorial service will be held at St John’s Lutheran Church, Southbank, and live-streamed to her mother, Ruth, in California. A plaque will be unveiled, and a tree planted in Julie’s memory, led by Loren O’Keeffe, founder of The Missed Foundation. For five decades, Ruth has lived without closure, and this memorial represents a small but significant step in keeping Julie’s story alive and acknowledging the profound impact of unresolved loss.
