When hope puts grief on hold: Support to live with unresolved loss

Living in the Liminal Space, a new book by CQUniversity Social Work Professor Sarah Wayland, explores the profound emotional toll on families navigating the unresolved grief of a missing loved one. Drawing from over 25 years of research, police counselling, and direct practice with families, she examines “liminality,” the agonising state of uncertainty between hope and despair. The book provides a practical and compassionate framework for practitioners to support those experiencing “living grief,” framing it as a space where resilience can grow.
Professor Sarah Wayland will launch the book with The Missed Foundation and Loren O’Keeffe at CQUniversity Sydney on Thursday 6 August, marking the end of National Missing Persons Week 2026.
