The long goodbye: how families of missing people suffer a unique kind of grief

ABC News, 30 June 2024

CEO of The Missed Foundation, Loren O’Keeffe, and Associate Professor Sarah Wayland spoke with the ABC about the unique and complex challenges faced by families of missing persons.

Sarah explained the concept of ambiguous loss, comparing its impact to post-traumatic stress disorder. “Families of missing people not only have the details as to how the person disappeared, but also the imagining of what might have happened,” she said. She emphasized that missing persons should be seen as a public health crisis, not just a police issue.

Loren added, “Families feel completely abandoned when they need such a broad range of practical legal, financial, emotional, and psychological supports, so it is unconscionable that our leaders fail to recognise the magnitude of this impact.”
