‘Not forgotten’: A memorial for Samantha Knight after 40 years

Forty years after Samantha Knight disappeared from Bondi, Waverley Council is establishing a memorial for her at Waverley Cemetery, offering her family a dedicated place to mourn.
Loren O’Keefe spoke to The Daily Telegraph about the profound reality of ambiguous loss, noting that missing persons cases involve a continual lack of clarity that creates unresolved grief. She explained that psychologists view this as one of the most traumatic form of stress, which unlike standard grief, actually gets harder to accept over time. Without traditional closure rituals like a funeral or visiting a grave, a memorial plaques can offer families meaningful comfort. Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh also underscored how important it is to keep Samantha’s memory alive.
